It’s such a difficult thing to put into words.
Most importantly, I love Jesus. Identifying with Him permeates everything I do in life. It gives me purpose in the present and hope for the future. I was only six years old when I realized I needed a Savior and gave my life to Him, and every day since He has proved faithful and good, regardless of whether my circumstances were difficult or delightful.
When I was in fourth grade, my parents started homeschooling me and my siblings. As a people pleaser who has a love/hate relationship with deadlines, I had always been decent at school, but homeschooling opened up a new universe of knowledge and I absolutely loved it. Instead of random facts and dates, history came alive with first-hand accounts and reenactments. Science turned into a love of nature and a fascination with the details of God’s creation. (Math was still a struggle, but, hey.)
On the occasion of my fourteenth birthday, I received a (shared) birthday gift of our family’s first digital camera. I began taking pictures of those fascinating things in nature, and bringing the camera on our family outings became a way that I could document “history.”
Having those pictures, as well as the ones my mom took with her film camera throughout my childhood, is particularly meaningful to me because I’m terrible at remembering things. I love looking through albums and being reminded of events from long ago, that facial expression my sister used to make, or when I first met my (now) husband.
Speaking of my handsome fella, we tied the knot in 2015 after a whirlwind courtship and engagement, and we love being married. :) I’m so thankful for his encouragement to keep growing and learning. In fact, during a time when I was really struggling with our infertility diagnosis and wondered what to do with my love of family when it didn’t seem to be God’s will for us to have one of our own, he was the one who suggested I turn my little photography hobby into something more.
